The Underwater Council was established in 1998
The Underwater Council of British Columbia is a non-profit society dedicated to promoting safe recreational SCUBA diving, environmental protection and acting as the unified voice of recreational divers in BC.
The purposes of the Society are to:
(A) provide a mechanism through which the interests and activities of associations and individuals in British Columbia with an interest in sport and recreational underwater activities, can he coordinated and represented to government, industry and the public;
(B) provide a public participation mechanism for sport and recreational underwater activities;
(C) promote, market, co-ordinate, support and encourage safe sport and recreational underwater activities through associations and individuals;
(D) advance opportunities for sport and recreational underwater activities, by supporting:
(i) the promotion of diving tourism,
(ii) the creation of underwater attractions,
(iii) the conservation and protection of marine life and of underwater heritage sites,
(iv) the enhancement of the marine environment,
(E) conserve and protect the marine environment, relative to sport and recreational underwater activities, through research, publication, public awareness, education
